Getty shoot in Laguna Beach, CA

I love shooting for Getty Images. It gives me the freedom to do what I love and make money. It also gives me the opportunity to share my vision with the world. I lived in Laguna Beach for a few months with my family and so wherever we go, I let Getty know and we create an assignment. This one was called Sound Waves. The assignment was to get great surf shots and to capture part of the culture of surfing. Well the surf footage already on the site is amazing, so I thought, unless I am going to rent a small aircraft with a Tyler mount or get right into the waves, I am not going to try and better what’s already there. So I visioned a way to communicate the feeling of joining the force of nature, as we do when we ride a wave. Enjoy.

Swimming Lessons

Today was the last day that our community pool was open. As of tomorrow our “Walden Pond” is closed for the summer. My kids, Joella and Jesse and I frequented the pool nearly daily. Joella learned how to swim floatie free last summer at 4 years old. Jesse, who is 3, forgot one sunny afternoon, that he didn’t have his floaties on and jumped into the pool. He paddled hard to get his head above water but just didn’t quite have the power to bring himself up for air. What an amazing experience it was to jump in fully clothed and save his life. Its amazing what can happen in a moment, how in an instant life can shift profoundly. It brought me back to a short film I shot a couple years ago for Ellen Raine-Scott, entitled “Swimming Lessons”. Check out this sweet little trailer.

Costa Rica with Lotus Yoga

I had prayed for a yoga retreat for the past 6 years. I had had 2 kids and gone through post pardum depression and some serious ups and downs.  In fact, when I was super down one day, probably my most downest day ever, and I was taking a walk through the town of Fort Langley, and a huge hand appeared from the sky. It was the hand of Tony Robbins.  That’s right, one of the most positive people in the world.  And he said, “hello, I’m Tony Robbins, what’s your name?”  And he never wavered from looking directly into my eyes.  Like he knew I needed help. He said, “Is this your family?  Your children?  So nice to meet you.  Take Care of yourself” and with a big comforting smile he let go of my hand and on my way I went.  Instantly healed.

So, years later, the perfect yoga retreat appeared.  On the internet.  I was searching for Kundalini classes.  There it was, in Costa Rica with Mary Paterson.  Never been to her class, figured I’d better go. Walked in a half an hour late, unknowingly.  Really enjoyed the class and told her afterwards, I am coming on your retreat.  And within 48 hours I had booked the trip.

The retreat was amazing, the resort was amazing, the ladies I met and practiced with and Mary – my new teacher, all amazing.  We shot a bunch of footage while we were there for her to use as promotional tools.

This is Mary’s link on YouTube.

Apple Commercial with Sarah McLachlan

Here is a little story of manifesting.  I had just had my second child, Jesse.  He was 3 months old and I was itching for creative work.  Going a little crazy actually.  So I decided to create a piece for my Director/DP reel that would involve a 360 degree move, big green screen stuff and a herd of horses with gorgeous models in evening dresses riding towards the camera.  The crew was in place, location, animal wrangler, stunt doubles, gear, etc and then I got a call.  The day before principal photography.  It was may agent, Barbara Bird.  She said, “Kelly, Apple Computers just called looking for a production company to bid on the job, and I told them they need Kelly Mason”.  I said,  ”Thanks Barbs but I’m busy, about to shoot a huge spot for my reel”.  Then I remembered her tone getting quite firm, “its Apple Computers and you will get paid.”

As God had it, I won the bid.  The Apple team came to Vancouver.  I got to hire all my friends.  And had a very bonding experience with Sarah.  She walked into the studio and said, “I have been up since 3:00 with my 18 month old and I said, “So have I!”

So, it is amazing how reality unfolds, just when you think you are creating something perfect and right, that desire to create manifests in a way that one would have never expected – always better.
